Via Transilvanica: The Trail That Unites Romania

Discover Romania's very own Camino

Imagine walking across an entire country—through ancient forests, mountain passes, medieval villages, and centuries of living history. That’s Via Transilvanica, Romania’s first long-distance trail: a 1,400 km journey from the sacred Putna Monastery in Bucovina to the banks of the Danube at Drobeta-Turnu Severin.

What Makes Via Transilvanica Unique?

More than a hiking route, it’s a cultural corridor—a path that connects people, landscapes, and traditions. Inspired by El Camino de Santiago, the trail was developed by the Tășuleasa Social Association and completed in 2022. Along its way, you’ll cross 10 counties, 400 communities, and 7 cultural regions, each offering its own stories and flavors.

  • Bucovina – painted monasteries & mountain serenity

  • Ținutul de Sus – folklore & forested hills

  • Terra Siculorum – Hungarian heritage & thermal springs

  • Terra Saxonum – fortified churches & medieval villages

  • Terra Dacica – ancient ruins & legends

  • Terra Banatica – multicultural charm & national parks

  • Terra Romana – Roman echoes & Danube views

Art Along the Way

Every kilometer is marked by a hand-carved andesite stone, sculpted by artists from around the world. Together, they form one of the largest outdoor sculpture exhibitions in Europe—a living museum under open skies.

Who Can Walk the Trail?

Whether you’re a hiker, cyclist, horseback rider, or slow traveler, Via Transilvanica invites you to go at your own pace. From short day trips to multi-week adventures, the trail offers authentic encounters: homemade meals, local wines, and evenings spent in village guesthouses where tradition is still alive.

Why It Matters

Via Transilvanica promotes sustainable tourism, supports local economies, and reconnects people with nature and heritage. It’s a project that unites—not just places, but people.

Beyond the trail, rural Romania remains one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. It’s a land of timeless traditions, untouched landscapes, and communities that welcome you with open arms. Here, mass tourism hasn’t taken over—and that’s what makes it magical.

Whether you’re wandering through Saxon villages, tasting homemade jams in a mountain guesthouse, or listening to stories around a village fire, you’ll find something rare: authenticity.

So lace up your boots, grab your backpack, and come explore a Romania that’s wild, warm, and wonderfully real.
