Bellu's Garden of Souls

Discover stories of old and dive into Romanian culture, architecture and much more

Bellu’s history dates back 1858 when local authorities relocated all cemeteries beyond the city limits due to heightened cholera risks.

The Cemetery, also called “Bellu’s Garden of Souls” was founded on the domain of an orchard with oranges. The first “inhabitants” of the “Souls Garden” were brought from other cemeteries situated around the churches.

Over time, the cemetery transformed into a remarkable open-air gallery, featuring almost 200 striking funeral sculptures and tombstones designed by renowned artists of the era, now esteemed as historical monuments.

Many of the tombs are works of art, created by famous artists or architects such as D. Paciurea, Rafaello Romanelli, Karl Stork, Frederik Stork and Ion Mincu
